Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid

I am going to assume you have already tried to un-install and re-install  java from the ‘Add/Remove’ Programs CPL. otherwise you wouldn’t be here. the problem is, when you try to reinstall JRE, it fails with the error "Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid"
Sun suggest you try the Windows Installer removal tool. Although this may not help you if you find the JRE is not in the list.
java error

WHY it fails I don’t know at this stage, but from what I have gathered, for some reason there is a previous version of the application sitting in a MSI in the

C:Documents and Settings<username>Application DataSunJavajrexxxxxxxx

folder.

Running this MSI will a) install java and b) fix all your problems
at first I couldn’t locate the file so I did a search for
“JRE*.MSI” in the /Documents and Settings/ Folder and it brought it up. (make sure you search in hidden folders.)

Once I ran this install on a users computer, the problem in question (a Citrix launching page) was resolved. no restart required. Easy.
